The ruined Norman medieval church at Knowlton in Dorset was built sometime in the twelfth century and sits at the centre of a pagan earth circle and so is clear evidence of the christianisation of older pagan sites. Knowlton is now scarcely even a hamlet and it is believed that the village was wiped out by bubonic plague in 1485. In 1747 the church roof fell in and the church was abandoned and left to fall into ruin.
