Towanroath Engine House
Reference: CO27
Location: Cornwall
Gallery: Cornwall,
The Wheal Coates tin mine opened in 1802 and was worked until its closure in 1913, at its peak it employed 140 miners. The site is most notable for the iconic Towanroath Shaft engine house which was responsible for keeping the water out of the shaft 600 feet below. At high tide you can hear the waves crashing against the rocks through a grate on the floor of the ruin. I had visited the site the evening before but fog had descended just before I had arrived. The next evening conditions were better and my favourite image was this one taken 10 minutes after the sun had set.
