Reference: DO12
Location: Agglestone Rock
Gallery: Dorset,

Agglestone Rock is a sandstone block of around 500 tonnes approximately 1 mile from the village of Studland in South Dorset.  hundred years ago it was a flat topped anvil shape but it subsequently collapsed and tilted into its present shape. The rock is a relic left after quarry excavations had finished and has diminished in size with weathering. Legend has a more romantic explanation of how the stone came to be here, the devil threw the rock from the Isle of Wight with the intention of flattening Corfe Castle. The rock is used by local rock climbing clubs and 10 or so enthusiasts arrived shortly after me.
