Legend tells that the spectacular series of rock stacks were built by a giant named Bedruthan who used them as stepping stones to traverse the bay. The largest of the rocks, Samaritan Island, is named after the brig The Samaritan which was wrecked upon the rock in 1846 when her cargo of silks was ‘rescued’ by local people and outfitted the population for miles around. Although the skies were overcast and brooding a small slither of colour at the horizon lifted the scene.
