Black Hairstreak

Reference: BU39
Location: Bernwood Forest, Oxford
Gallery: Butterflies,

A trip with Dad to Bernwood Forest near Oxford to see one of the rarest Butterflies in Britain, the Black Hairstreak. An elusive and enigmatic Butterfly found in sunny glades where mature Blackthorn grows in just a few places in the Midlands. Even where it is found the Black Hairstreak is very elusive given its habit of sitting in the tree tops feeding on honeydew. We’ve seen them before but our photos weren’t great. The only chance of a decent photo would come if they ventured down to feed on privet blossom and thankfully one did, for 10 seconds during our 5 hours of searching!
