Along many coasts longshore drift can be a problem and groynes work by reducing the wind and wave-driven movement of beach material along the coast. However, over the years wooden groynes are worn down by the relentless battering from the sea and they can then make very attractive photographic subjects. I timed my visit for high tide and although the weather forecast was bad there were enough breaks in the clouds to allow some sunshine to sidelight the groynes. A long exposure captured movement in the clouds. Within minutes of getting back to the car the heavens opened again.
