Gold Hill, Shaftesbury

Reference: DO65
Location: Dorset
Gallery: Dorset,

Gold Hill runs north south and the houses face westerly and so an afternoon shot was the plan. When you cross behind St Peters Church and walk down the hidden steep cobbled street a view opens up which sends you back hundreds of years. You can see the sun shining all the way up the street giving a lovely lime green tinge to the mossy cobbles with the right hand side of the street falling into shadow. The vale in the background still has some of the morning mistiness. The street was the main setting for the 1973 “Boy on Bike” television advertisement for Hovis bread, which has been voted Britain’s favourite advertisement of all time. It was directed by Ridley Scott. The hill is still known to many people as “Hovis Hill”
