In the 1800s after years of smuggling in the area, the Coast Guard Cottages and the Watch House were built housing the Preventative Officers and their boat. The Coastguard Cottages (Grade II listed) and the Watch House were completed in 1828 and remain largely unchanged today. The river Dark Water drains Beaulieu Heath and reaches the sea at this point via a tunnel and sluice gate which was just to the right of where I stood and provided faster flowing water in the foreground.
