Six-belted Clearwing

Reference: MO36
Location: St Catherine's Hill, Winchester
Gallery: Moths,

While working with a 121 client at St Catherine’s Hill near Winchester I noticed a small insect which I initially passed off as a wasp species. On closer examination I realised it was a moth, a Six-belted Clearwing, part of the family which has evolved to mimic a wasp for projection. Only a handful of this species are seen in Hampshire each year and most are only seen by attracting them to pheromone lures. A really good find and one which we both enjoyed photographing.
