Violet Helleborine

Reference: FF12
Location: Fareham, Hampshire
Gallery: Flowers (mainly Orchids),

I read about some Violet Helleborines near Fareham and decided to head out there on Saturday afternoon as I didn’t have a workshop. They were on the west side of the embankment where the Old Railway line ran. I took the co-ordinates down and having parked the car made my way southwards along the western side of the embankment. I checked my blue dot on Maps on my iPhone and re-traced my steps a little and finally found the right area and it wasn’t long before I found 6 Violet Helleborine spikes. The Violet Helleborine is a rare Orchid and is restricted to south and south-east England. Although the flower is mainly pale green it does have an attractive pale pinkish lip and the plant’s name refers to its violet stem and leaves.
